So far there have been a few different kinds of cancer therapy, such as surgical removal, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and the combinations of the above. In additions, there exist also many different kinds of complimentary alternative medicines. But none of the above has been satisfactory. Although surgery is very effective in many cases, some tumors can not be treated by surgery due to their location or some other medical consideration. When the cancers have spread out, it is foreseeable that surgery is not valid and the cancer will re-occur sooner or later. This is one of the reasons why cancer is so tough to conquer. If cancer cells have metastasized to lymph nodes or other tissues it needs either radiation or chemotherapy for a systematic clean-up. One of the problems with radiation or chemotherapy is the lack of specificity. They kill both good cells and cancer cells simultaneously. This results in a lot of adverse side effects, including the break-down of the immune system that is the most important self-defense mechanism against malignancies. The immunosuppression has been one of the dilemmas for oncologists performing chemotherapy. For decades doctors all over the world have been trying hard to look for a cure that is potent against tumor but with no side effect and capable of boosting the host immunity. So far it seems that autologous NK cell therapy is one of the best recognized choices to meet all the requirements mentioned earlier. According to the clinical trial results released by various centers in US, Europe and Japan, autologous NK therapy are beneficial to cancer patients and offers excellent chances for them to recover from malignancy and to improve their quality of life Cancer is an uncontrollable malignant tumor growth. It happens without being noticed at the early stage. Only until the cancer cells accumulated into a big mass can they be felt or detected. At the later stages can cells normally invade other tissues or organ and consume a lot of energy and nutrients, which finally kills the patients.
Among our lymphoid cells, there are about 60~80% of T-lymphocytes, 5~15% of B-lymphocytes, and about 15~20% of non-T and non-B cells. The origin and biology of there cells remained unknown until 1973.Two American research institutes independently discovered the existence of a brand new lymphocytes with potent anti-tumor activity. The new hind of lymphoid cells were later named natural killer cells in an International Natural Immunity Conference held in Hawaii in 1986.
Autologous NK therapy— an illustration of interaction between NK cells and cancer cells
Autologous NK cell therapy is to treat cancer by increasing the host immunity against cancer cell. In other words, it is probably the only natural anti-cancer therapy that is potent, advanced without repulsion and side effects. The functions of NK cells include launching attack against viruses and tumor cells. Cytotoxic T cell (Tc cell) and NK cell are two of the most famous killer cells in the human immune system. However Tc cells requires prior encounter and activation with its target but NK cells does not. This means NK cell can kill viruses and tumor cells at the most immediate timing, which makes NK cells the most important element against viruses and tumors. Besides, the cytotoxic activity of NK is much stronger than Tc cells by many folds. There are still people desperately trying Chinese herbs and functional foods with a slim hope to boost their immunity and hence help them to cope with cancer. Unfortunately in most of the situations the efficacy can not be shown. Even if there is minimal effect, it can not be reproduced or proven by scientific methodology in a convincing way.
Method for ex vivo expansion of NK cells in large quantity
Our laboratory is good at expanding NK cells (originally isolated from the patient), by high-tech procedures, to huge amounts and then inject them back to the patient to treat the cancer. Briefly the cells are isolated from about 20 c.c. of peripheral blood and then subject to ex vivo culture for 14 days. During the incubation time the cells are fed with specially formulated recipes consisting of mainly cytokines and nutrients. At the end of two weeks there are about 1~6 x 109 NK cells which are them injected back to the patients. In general, there are about 1~5 x108 NK cells in a healthy adult. By simple calculation it can be concluded that the amounts of NK cells injected back in each treatment are about 6~10 times of those in an adult. Therefore NK cell therapy is a very potent and effective anti-cancer therapy. Since this therapy is custom-made, using autologous cells, there is not supposed to be any side effect, repulsion or pain. Due to its simplicity, safety and efficacy, it has gained more popularity among the scientific field. We believe that in the very near future, NK cell therapy will be more widely adopted to treat cancer. The duration of NK cell therapy is variable depending on the cancer type and the stage of disease. It is generally recommended to receive NK therapy once per week or once per two weeks at the beginning stage when the intensive treatment is needed. After a consecutive 12~15 treatments, the frequency can be reduced to once per 2~3 months.
NK cells—the natural and potent anti-cancer agent
NK cells can kill virus-infected cells and cancer cells immediately after encounter. They do not needs prior priming or sensitization and therefore are the host’s super killer cells. There are more NK cells in young children but their amounts decrease gradually with age and worsened by smoking, alcohol consumption, stress and anxiety. People with low quantity of NK cells tend to contract tumor more easily. In other word, NK cells are naturally designed to reside in the body to patrol and reduce the risk of cancer and virus infection. Unfortunately NK cells exist only in small amounts. If NK cells can be expanded to huge amounts and then infuse them back to the patient, it should be the best, most direct and safest way of cancer therapy. It has been established that NK cells therapy only offers a good chance to fight against tumor, but also improves the quality of life due the b-endorphin secretion by NK cells. Among he various immunotherapies compared so far, the most efficacious and safest one is the NK cell therapy developed by our company. We sincerely hope that cancer patients can have easy access to effective and safe anti-cancer therapies, not only to treat their cancer but also to improve their life quality.
The methodology used in our company is a valuable asset of a continuous 19 years research. The advantages of this technology include being able to expand NK cells into large amounts and with high anti-cancer activity in very short period of time. Most important of all, all our culturing and preparation is conducted in dust-free and germ-free environment in accordance with US FDA guidelines for biological products. This is to ensure the highest quality of our product and safety of our customer. During the incubation time microorganism and pyrogen contamination are frequently checked. We know we can not be too cautious and we put the safety of patients as the first priority in all our operations.
